School to Shelter: A Harman Construction Adaptive Reuse Project

When spaces outlive their original purpose, they don’t have to be left to decay. At Harman Construction, we believe in breathing new life into old buildings, transforming them into spaces that serve new roles while preserving their history. The new Verona Animal Shelter, housed in the former Verona Elementary School, is a perfect example of our commitment to adaptive reuse and sustainable design.

Preserving the School’s Legacy

The shelter is nearing completion, replacing the abandoned Verona Elementary School. The need for a larger space became urgent as the animals quickly outgrew their Lyndhurst location. Harman Construction honors the history of the school by transforming the space into a modern, functional shelter while preserving the character of the original structure in innovative ways. One of the project’s goals is to reclaim as much of the original building as possible while conserving energy and resources, creating an affordable and sustainable new home for the shelter.

Reducing Environmental Impact

Following the example of other adaptive reuse projects like The Winchester Star and Valley Vital Care in Waynesboro, Harman Construction excels at minimizing environmental impact. By integrating modern systems with historic structures, we ensure a seamless blend of the old and new. From design to completion, we are committed to every project’s success, contributing to the local economy and preserving community legacies.

360° Cleanable Design

Each animal housing room in the shelter has been thoughtfully renovated, featuring trench drains for easy hose cleaning. The walls, built from brick rather than drywall, can be sanitized easily, which is essential for maintaining a clean environment for the animals. One challenge Harman tackled was incorporating modern technology into the old school structure, ensuring the facility is updated with current standards while preserving its charm.

Harman Construction’s expertise in adaptive reuse projects blends preserving history with meeting modern needs. Our attention to detail and commitment to sustainability make us a trusted partner in transforming spaces and enhancing communities.
