The History of Harman Construction Frank Harman begins his career in business as he owns and operates poultry hatchery, equipment and farm businesses. The hatchery grew to become the largest in VA in the 50’s and 60’s. — 1940 Carl and Orden Harman decide to follow in their father’s entrepreneurial footsteps. They start Harman Farm Supplies and begin selling and installing buildings, grain bins, and feed equipment. — 1971 Harman begins to transition into a commercial builder, due in large part to the company’s strong relationship with Butler Manufacturing—a leading developer and manufacturer of metal building systems. — 1980 Harman Farm Supplies becomes Harman Construction. — 1985 Harman completes its first major shopping center, Market Square East in Harrisonburg. — 1986 Harman establishes a Design Department with a complete AutoCAD system by the end of the 80s. — 1988 Harman receives Butler’s prestigious “Career Builder” award—the first of three Butler awards during the decade. — 1991 HCI is awarded Northeast region “Builder of the Year” by Butler Manufacturing. — 1992 HCI constructs the $2.4 million dollar Seminary Building for Eastern Mennonite University. This project becomes the first of many projects successfully completed — 1993 HCI constructs the 135,000 square foot Packaging Services, Inc. project. This is the first of many “tilt-up” concrete projects completed by HCI. — 1995 HCI is awarded the Mini-storage “Builder of the Year” by Butler Manufacturing. — 1996 Harman surpasses the $20 million mark for annual volume. — 1999 Harman moves to its current office and warehouse facilities and Carl Harman serves as president of the Associated General Contractors of Virginia (AGCVA). — 2000 HCI surpasses 750,000 Square foot of Tilt-up Concrete facilities constructed. HCI is awarded Regional “Hardwall Builder of the Year” by Butler Manufacturing. — 2001 HCI surpasses 1,000.000 s.f. of Tilt-up construction. HCI introduces the “R-Steel” Wall Panel System to the Shenandoah Valley, and helps Butler Manufacturing launch the product nationally. — 2002 HCI is awarded Northeast region “Butler of the Year” by Butler Manufacturing. HCI is awarded the highly sought after American Woodmark project, a 320,000 s.f. manufacturing facility. This $10 million project will bring 300 new jobs to Hardy County, West Virginia. — 2003 Harman is named Butler’s “Builder of the Year”—one of three more Butler awards for the decade. — 2004 V.P. Wayne Witmer begins a two year term as President of the Associated General Contractors of Virginia – Valley District — 2005 HCI is selected as a key partner in helping Merck complete a series of critical projects at the Elkton , Virginia facility. This series of projects, started in 2006 and continued into 2008, totaled nearly $20M in value and helped Merck establish strategic initiatives on schedule. — 2006 HCI surpasses the $35M mark in annual volume. — 2007 The first of several Harman employees attains the USGBC’s LEED Accredited Professional status. The award and completion of four distinct hotel projects solidifies Harman’s position as the leading hotel and hospitality contractor in the Shenandoah Valley. Harman surpasses the $40 million mark for annual volume — 2008 Carl Harman, transitions into CEO role and names Wayne Witmer the new company president and COO. — 2009 HCI completes the $15.5M Hahn Medical Center, a 3-story, 87,000 sf medical office building located on the new campus of Rockingham Memorial Hospital. HCI surpassed the $25 million level for career sales volume with Butler Manufacturing. — 2010 Harman Construction celebrates 40 years of service. — 2011 Harman earns the Gold Award for Safety from The Virginia Contractors Group Self-Insurance Association (VACO) — 2012 Harman earns VACO’s Bronze Award for Safety — 2013 Harman President Wayne Witmer is asked to serve on the Butler building systems national advisory council. — 2016 Harman surpasses the $30,000,000 mark in career Butler sales. Harman completes the beautiful new $25,000,000 corporate campus for the Shenandoah Valley Electric Cooperative. — 2018 Harman Construction Inc transitions into an employee owned company. The transaction to purchase the company from founder Carl Harman was completed on April 30, 2019. — 2019 Harman breaks ground on the new Bowman Andros processing facility in Mt. Jackson, VA. This 155,000 sf design build project was completed in 2021. — 2021 Harman celebrates 50 years of serving our clients in the Shenandoah Valley. We have grown from a small rural builder in 1971 to a full service design build GC providing comprehensive delivery of projects both large and small. — 2021
