Dawn of Construction: Public Works Concrete Pour

Bright and early before the break of dawn, the team at Harman Construction, spearheaded by Superintendent JT Lam, embarked on a significant endeavor at the Harrisonburg City Public Works Administration Office Building. Together with the skilled team from Steve Lloyd Concrete Services, they initiated a crucial phase of construction: pouring the concrete for the second-floor deck. This wasn't just another day at the site; it was a carefully orchestrated operation set to unfold over the course of the day, utilizing every available minute of daylight to ensure the concrete sets perfectly.

With a brisk 60-degree forecast, the team was poised to take advantage of the relatively warm weather, an essential factor given the extended setting times required by the cooler temperatures of the season. Starting at the unconventional hour of 3:00 AM, the site was buzzing with activity, trucks were lined up and machinery strategically placed, all ready for the day's monumental task.

The challenge of a second-floor deck pour is immense, requiring the concrete to be pumped skywards through a 50-meter pump truck which poured about 100 yards of concrete. This was an operation of logistics, with trucks arriving in succession, ensuring a continuous flow of concrete to the site. This seamless movement is crucial, with two trucks always at the ready by the hopper, and others queued, ensuring the pour is uninterrupted and smooth.

This project is more than a job; it's a testament to the collaborative spirit and the impact of local partnerships. With approximately 65 individuals on-site, including drivers, finishers, safety personnel, and inspectors, it's a vibrant example of the community coming together to achieve something remarkable. The involvement of local businesses, such as Mather Architects and Monteverde Engineering, especially in the design-build aspects of the project, reinforces the value of local expertise and the benefits of close-knit collaboration.

The successful completion of the second-floor deck pour marks a significant milestone in the project, a step that not only advances the construction process but also symbolizes the hard work, planning, and community involvement it took to get to this point. It's a moment of pride for Harman Construction and all the local partners and individuals who contributed to making this day a success. Together, we're not just building structures; we're laying the groundwork for future growth and continuing to strengthen the fabric of our local community.
